The Royal Detoxification Program: Pulse Diagnosis and Panchakarma
The supervised Ayurvedic treatments, like the self-administered detoxification programs, are designed to cleanse the body of toxins and restore balance. These treatments can be very effective in maintaining general wellness as well as in addressing specific disorders. Again, the difference between the self-administered programs and the treatment programs in a Maharishi Ayurveda clinic is that the supervised treatment programs, called Panchakarma, are deeper and more thorough.
Panchakarma is an integrated series of treatments and procedures that, taken together, dislodge impurities from the cells and tissues and flush them from the body. These detoxification therapies are generally taken in 3-day, 5-day and 7-day packages, although longer packages are available and recommended for more serious disorders.
The treatment programs are tailored to the disorder, but most involve herbalized oil massage (abhyanga) by two technicians working simultaneously on the patient in a synchronized manner. The massage promotes the penetration of the oil deep into the tissues to loosen the aggravated doshas and toxins and push them into the body’s circulatory system. The massage is then followed by a heat treatment typically designed to move the toxins into the organs of elimination (typically the bowel), followed by elimination therapies to remove the impurities from the bowel (enemas) and other parts of the body.
Personal Experiences with Maharishi Panchakarma
The following accounts should not be considered to be typical experiences. Results will vary greatly depending on many factors, including the nature and severity of the condition and the length of the treatments. The research shows significant decreases in negative moods (anxiety, depression, fatigue) and increased vigor, and a significant decrease in fat soluble toxins in the body from the Maharishi Panchakarma treatments alone. Research also shows significantly reduced inpatient and outpatient care needed by faculty at Maharishi International University who received Panchakarma and also practice TM and generally have Ayurvedic diets, as compared to norms and other Iowa college faculty. The accounts below are also from persons who practice TM and have been educated about their body type and the Ayurvedic diet that is most suitable for them. As a result, they are benefitting from their diet and meditation practice, as well as the treatments.
Thyroid Condition, Menopause Related Fatigue, and Other Symptoms
Olena P. from Des Moines, Iowa was raised in the Ukraine about 60 miles from the Chernobyl nuclear plant. That plant exploded in 1986 releasing radioactive material in the area. As a result, Olena had a long-standing thyroid disorder, along with what her doctor told her were menopause-related spikes in her blood pressure, pretty constant fatigue and a lack of energy, and more recently excessive hair loss. Olena’s Kundalini Yoga teacher recommended that she go to The Raj in Fairfield for Ayurvedic treatments, and Olena did her research and decided to go. She was interviewed a month after she finished her five-days of Panchakarma treatments at The Raj. Olena said:
After my yoga teacher recommended the Maharishi Ayurveda treatments, I looked online for information, and the Ayurveda lifestyle and diet advice made sense to me as the right way to live. I didn’t want to just take medicines or even supplements all the time. I think I was open to it because so many people in the Ukraine use traditional medicine, natural medicine, for healing. As an example, when I was sick as a child my mother would give me special teas for my colds and put ground up mustard seed in my socks and the heat would also help get rid of the cold.
I went to The Raj for a five-day treatment program for elimination of toxins [massage, heat and elimination therapies]. It was a wonderful experience. I had lost enough weight to go down a full size, and when I came home my son and husband said I looked so much younger and more refreshed. I really felt much better right away.
Before the Raj treatments, my blood pressure would sometimes be normal at 125-130 systolic but often would be up to about 150. After the treatments it is normal again and the fatigue is completely gone. Now I do a vigorous Yoga program for 40-60 minutes, three times a day, something I couldn’t do before. I also had a blood test as part of a medical exam after I finished treatment. From it my regular doctor saw how much better my thyroid condition was and started a reduction in my medication from 120 mcg to 100 mcg once a day. Also, the excessive hair loss I had been experiencing stopped.
If you go through the treatments your condition definitely changes.
Chronic Fatigue and Neurological Symptoms
Carrie G. from Houston saw many physicians and healers before finally being examined by Kulreet Chaudhary, M.D., a prominent integrative neurologist in California (author of The Prime, Harmony Books 2016). Dr. Chaudry recommended that Carrie go to The Raj for two to three weeks of Panchakarma treatments. Carrie suffered from chronic fatigue, insomnia, muscle weakness and pain, exercise intolerance, and had gastrointestinal issues. She said she had been diagnosed with non-specific neurological symptoms. Prior to deciding to do a two-week program in-residence at The Raj, Carrie had been suffering with her symptoms for more than four years despite numerous visits to MDs, various healers, and numerous diets including a raw foods diet, living foods diet (raw and vegan), Paleo diet, and the SCD or specific carbohydrates diet, acupuncture (made things worse), IV nutritional therapy, IV detoxification programs, neurofeedback, and an electrical stimulation program. Carrie said nothing really worked, so following Dr. Chaudhary’s recommendation, she went to The Raj in January2017 for her first series of treatments. Jay interviewed Carrie when she was on a subsequent 10-day treatment program in August2017. She said:
The Ayurvedic treatments were a catalyst, and I’ve noticed the improvements throughout the nervous system. I had two marma therapy treatments [marma is a kind of acupressure on various points of the physiology that are especially important in Ayurveda], and I walked out of the treatments thinking ‘how could I feel this way.’ It was amazing.
After the first trip here [to The Raj], my energy levels changed and that was one of the biggest benefits. I would say I have 50% more energy, about 30% reduced pain, exercise tolerance has improved 25%, my GI [gastrointestinal issues] have improved, sleep is more reliable and much less ‘brain fog’ as my cognitive abilities had been severely impaired.
Carrie said that her problems had been caused by exposure to environmental toxins, so getting rid of the toxins was a high priority. She is also now following much more of an Ayurvedic daily routine, including an herbal supplement program that was recommended (taking the ashwaganda and brahmi herbs daily), doing sun salutes and yoga, and practicing TM.
[The effects of the Panchakarma treatments on other disorders is set forth in the book].
