The game of poker is a card game in which the players place an initial amount of money into the pot before they see their cards. This is called a forced bet and it encourages competition. In most games of poker, the player to the left of the button has the privilege (or obligation) of making the first bet. Each player must then place in the pot enough chips (representing money, for which poker is almost always played) to make his total contribution equal to the bet of the player before him.

Before the cards are dealt, each player must place a certain amount of chips into the pot, usually by raising or lowering their blind bet. This is to ensure that there is a pot and encourage other players to join in the action.

When the dealer deals three cards to the table, which are community cards that anyone can use, there is a second betting round. After the second betting round is complete, the dealer puts a fourth card on the table which can be used by everyone (called the turn).

During this stage there is a third betting round. Once the betting is done, the fifth card on the board is revealed and the player with the highest hand wins. In order to have a good poker hand you need to bet often and aggressively. This will force weak hands out and allow you to win more money.
